It all paints a rather bleak picture for Manning, who's vowed to fight on despite growing calls for his sacking. Behind the scenes there remains a good amount of affection for the City head coach, who has commanded his dressing room and staff in a way that Johannes Hoff Thorup failed to.

The atmosphere at Colney is said to be vibrant, with players and staff alike loving to come to work. But that isn't the only important thing - as Manning himself attests often, it's a results business. And City simply aren't getting the results.

As I write this there are no plans to sack him, although things can change quickly. Mark Attanasio flies to Norfolk next week, and he'll have to defend his charge when he meets the media and answers fans' questions on Wednesday.
