Yes and no

That squad was streets ahead of this one, no denying. But…

They weren’t that good. Every time we went up we got smashed. Most of those players went nowhere special before or since. Buendia is the only counter example, and you can’t overstate his importance to that period of success.

I am more and more beginning to realise, however, just how good Farke was. Yes he had access to some talent, but he knew how to get the absolute best from them. Cantwell was amazing under Farke. Where is he now? Aarons was amazing under Farke. Where is he now? Godfrey? Onel played a lot, albeit he was younger. Lewis? The list goes on.

Clearly, so much success in football is and was driven by the money you have and the players you can buy. But sometimes you need a manager to bring the magic and make it happen.

Question for the day. What would Manning have done with the Farke promotion squad?
