Seems to me

that knippersack is the principal source of our recent travails - decision making all the shop. Thus, he needs to be got rid of.
To get rid of Manning without first getting rid of knapper would probably lead to a repetition of the same set of problems. However, to get rid of both at once, at this stage, would be pretty hazardous.
Answer therefore, get rid of knapper now, get in new/experienced/anyone else frankly as SD, and take it from there. Sorted (pro tem).
