It does feel as though we're getting in a bit of a vicious circle

After all, if you start expecting teammates to pass to where you are now then the logical/instinctive thing to do is stand still (after all, if you make a run you'll be running away from the ball). Which means the passing player doesn't even have the option of playing it ahead of you to where you're running...
