I’m old enough to remember when we had real community spirit and cohesion. We had a tangible sense of pride in our family, street, estates, towns/cites and being British. A genuine respect for our elders and authority was not just encouraged but expected.
The demise of where we’re at now as a nation compared to where we were in such a short space of time is quite frankly frightening. We’ve gone from a sense of togetherness born from Christian values (not that I’m religious) to only giving a s**t about our football club, a political party or worse the political situations of other countries. What about our own country? Our own communities and families? Our own children’s future?
I spent more of yesterday highly emotional. My abiding memory from yesterday was that feeling of togetherness and spirit I grew up knowing. Something that has been slowly eroded by successive governments and their policies.
I yearn this country gets back some of its dignity and identity that I grew up knowing so my children ( and the children of others) can feel the same sense of belonging I used to. That’s why I went yesterday.
