Basically because (a) I was bored and (b) I love plums.
I planted lots of different varieties and three trees have been runaway successes: the Warwickshire Drooper (which I only planted because of the name but produces fabulous sweet yellow plums), Heganta (lovely deep purple sweet plums which are freestone) and the Cambridge Gage (honey flavoured greengage).
This has also afforded my (theoretically adult) sons the opportunity for endless jokes along the lines of "how are your plums, dad?".
