That’s a very extreme position

There have always been limits on the freedom of speech, even in Britain, where the law has generally been on the side of free speech.

UK common law has traditionally been concerned with public order rather than with censorship. To be criminal, words have to be intended (or known to be likely) to stir up hatred against vulnerable categories of people. And the main UK legislation provides a broad exemption for the protection of free speech which permits expressions of hostility, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse.

That’s a sensible legal framework, but it needs to be applied properly
