I’m going to assume that you’re probably neither of the above, but that isn’t that relevant to be fair.

I’m pretty sure IFAB didn’t aim to develop rules for them to be subjective. They’ve tried to make it as clear as possible and not open to interpretation but it’s very difficult. The challenge in the Premier League is that refs will often avoid making a decision knowing that it will go to VAR. Whilst in theory a decision is overturned for clear and obvious errors, you will often see decisions for similar offences given and then not overturned. Hence the West Ham example
last night. If the ref had given it, there’s no way it would have been overturned.

‘A lottery’ is probably too strong, but there’s definitely inconsistency.
