Gut feelings, or intuition, can feel like they are "beating" the brain because the enteric nervous system (ENS), the nervous system in the gut, can process information and influence decisions independently of the brain. This "second brain" communicates with the brain through the vagus nerve and other pathways, leading to rapid, unconscious responses that can feel like gut feelings. These feelings often arise from past experiences and learned patterns, allowing for quick, albeit sometimes subconscious, judgments.
