the argument about the endless checks for adoption mentioned ^^^ against no checks and balances for natural parents in this thread is far too simplisitc. the adoption checks are both eminently sensible and absolutely necessary, there are some godawful perverts out there.

of course there are dreadful parents out there as well. the cost to carry out extensive checks on all prospective parents though would be insane and unmanageable. far cheaper for social workers to (in theory) be a circuit breaker for the wrong'uns.
