This is the bit i find confusing

All the noise is that it was either or, and that we had a preference for Mattsson. Topic probably looks like a more physical player and potentially a ball carrier, but it sounded like we felt Mattsson fit in really well with his ball playing ability.

But it doesnt really add up, did we prefer him purely on a value for money in that he would have been about a million cheaper?

If we just think he would be better for it, wed have made the deal work, surely?

Perhaps they were asking for add ons that we believed would be unreasonable, huge sell ons down the line.

Probably the only way it makes sense, unless we actually like Topic more after all, or its both
