to really comment. Most of the players who were on the fringes of that squad were too old by the time I saw them for me to make a judgement - but I know that, for instance, Terry Paine was supposed to be a fine player.
I think better examples of the manager trying to pick the best team rather than the best players were the Ramsey / Revie teams of the mid 70s - and we know how that worked.
I suspect that the only right answer to this is that you are only likely to win when the best players also make the best team.
