Corners. A new proposal.

At the moments corners are more WWF than football. Every single corner it’s carnage, and then at random the ref decides to sometimes pick out one of the 20 odd fouls going on simultaneously as worthy of punishment. Almost invariably for the defending team, almost never for the attacking team. The ref will then promptly completely forget that this decision has been made, and will on no account use that as a baseline for what counts as a foul at subsequent corners. Sometimes a mere brush of the opponent is sufficient for a foul. Other times you can literally fling an opponent to the ground and get waved on. The way corners are reffed is therefore infuriatingly random.

My proposal is that there should be a complete moratorium on fouls at corners. For the 5 seconds before and after a corner is taken, you literally cannot commit a foul. At least then everyone will know.

It would be like f**king Rollerball. Authorities could really lean into it, allowing teams to send on clubs, pads and helmets. Maybe temporary subs at corners, where you could bring on UFC stars for your fragile little wingers.

This would at least be fairer than the absolute f**king w**k referees allow at present every single week.
