Denmark in 1986 ...

... had a really widely admired team, with Michael Laudrup and Preben Elkjaer as it stars, and won all three group games. Their 6-1 win over Uruguay is one of the very best World Cup displays I've ever seen (on video, natch, I was only 4 at the time) and then they beat West Germany 2-0, who ended up in the final.

Then they lost 5-1 to Spain in the second round.

That said, West Germany were by far and away the best team in Italia '90's group stage, and they ended up winning. So now I don't know what to think.
