If it’s a release clause surely Man City would receive no sell on?

I assume a release clause is what it usually is, where a player can buy himself out of the contract. Obviously in reality that will get paid by the club who signs him once the release is activated but technically it’s not a transfer is it? Therefore no profit from transfer and no sell on due to City?
