The couple of times I've heard them, my overwhelming reaction

is that they're just terrible at drumming. They don't create a beat for people to follow and so the impact on chants is negligible. It's far more likely to be someone who starts a chant and drummer boy just bangs along with it, which rather defeats the object.

Therefore I conclude that the drum is just an opportunity to be a noisy t**t.
