The modern gladiators is a naff tv show but
the original version was where the romans used to feed christians to the lions. It's well known that some of the ancient gladiators became celebrities in their own right but what few people realise is that some of the lions were also famous. In fact one of the lions was so widely beloved that early christians would consider it an honour to be eaten by him. This is how gladiators got their name.
