Interesting observation

I've actually found the opposite, with the wealthiest people I know contributing the most money and time (on Boards etc. to charitable organizations).

As you say, it's tough to generalise and the most wealthy person I know has only given money to things that benefit him personally (for example, building a school so his kids are taught by the best teachers in the local area).
