It's more a cultural thing imho. The two parties represent two different cultures now.

Chauvinist, nativist, white supremicist, rural vs liberal, metropolitan, urban

That's not to say that class isn't an issue, but it more about values than the retail offer.

Brexit was a bit like this although there was a load of bulls**t offers added to that which helped swing it. I know people who voted Brexit because they genuinely thought that leaving would suddenly improve their lives in some magical way.
