But I can't help observing that only one side has got an expressed aim of wanting literally to eliminate the other side from the face of the earth

As for "colonialism" (sigh), (a) so that means it's really the Ottomans' fault? (b) there surely comes a point when people have been independent for long enough to take responsibility for their own actions, and (c) one might think that the hatred engendered by currently held vicious religious beliefs has more impact on the situation than having been ruled for a few decades by European powers a century ago.
