Not saying I’m a Carsley supporter, because I’m an observer of the England team, not a fan

But where are the examples in recent history of successful club managers becoming great international managers or coaches? Capello? Sven, maybe. But he was less successful in tournaments than Southgate. I’m sure there are some, I just can’t think of many. What I do know is that international teams which have been successful in the last 20-30 years have mostly not been coached by great club coaches. Löw, Deschamps, Spain’s coaches, Argentina…

Another thing is the hysteria in the media about a poor result in a game everyone said in advance was meaningless. An experiment, sure, a poor performance, definitely, but reason for a system overhaul and a period of self-flagellation?
