I think it comes from having been brought up in the era of Stanley Matthews, leather balls, and hobnailed boots, when players would pretend NOT to be hurt, rather than pretend TO be hurt.

It's one of the reasons why I think rugby is a superior game to football. The players don't fake injury to try to get the other player into trouble. The Argy rolling around after Becks flicked him with his boot is a classic example of what really pisses me off in football.
