The term racist is so freighted now it does hinder discussion

It's perfectly possible to be unintentionally racist.

And that's still bad.

But not allowing for a graded assessment I think provides a wedge for arseholes to obfuscate/ameliorate their acknowledged prejudices and co-opt sympathy they shouldn't gain.
