nothing to do with linguistics but a while back i scored a cultural thunderbastard

in a vain effort to try and improve my hideous lack of culture i booked tickets to see a portuguese fado singer who was due to perform at the theatre royal for the norfolk and norwich festival who goes by the name of mariza. she cancelled last minute so i never got to see her. she stuck in my mind because of her blond hair.

fast forward a couple of years and I was invited to a formal dinner by the portuguese armed forces with a pal of mine and we were sat at the top table. the portuguese commander was keen to impress so he got some lackeys to play a video of their homeland. usual stuff, lovely beaches, beautiful scenery, golf courses, the sights of lisbon and porto etc and then up pops Mariza the fado singer and so I pipe up with "ah, Mariza!" and the room falls silent and the commander looks at me like "how the f**k did you know about her?", anyway long story short but that one stupid thing turned out to be very lucrative.
