Given he has so many natural attributes, has been picked up by a good club, represented his country as he's come through, there is a strong sense of "I'm no 1 so why try harder?".
The problem being that he's in a profession that is intensely competitive - certainly at the levels he says he wants to operate at. People that are willing to do anything to succeed, while Adam drifts in to training, spends a lot of time standing about on the field seemingly watching the clouds.
I've said before off of on here - he could every bit the player someone like Emile Heskey was. H'e clearly no Harry Kane, but he could batter his CB inside out, terrorise them with his strength, run all day, harry, chase, offer himself in space, hold it up, throw yourself at it. If he had ANY kind of real drive about him, you feel he'd be capable of being a premier league player. Could he have the kind of career that Ashley Barnes has had, if he had a bit more of that "over my dead body", and "you might beat us this afternoon, but you'll be counting the bruises all next week"...
But that seems to be the problem. He comes across as once of life's great coasters, and frankly a bit dim. Bust a f**king gut, and you could be a really great player. He just doesnt seem to have the eye of the tiger.
