A combination of….

1) that’s what he’d been told by knapper but it didn’t entirely come off, and

2) he was under pressure and wanted to deflect a bit to highlight that there is general agreement that the lads need a hand and it would be coming in Jan.

I don’t think he’s been deliberately misleading. To be fair, that is more of a change to the squad than I would have expected prior to him saying that.
