from "schnellimbiss" which translates as fast food. i also recall polish "mojoes" working for us driving the tank transporters based in fallingbostel. in cyprus we had little bangladeshi lads that ran the choggi shops (little squalid huts on the base with a small hatch that they'd sell burgers and pop from) they would live and work in them and stay for a year iirc. i don't think they were food hygeine rated and none of them had a michelin star iirc. probably not as rigorous a selection process as the ghurkas i reckon but they got to serve the monarch and whatknot. in oman we also had bangladeshis but they didn't cook any burgers at all, just clean the camp, sort the rubbish out and that. fancy a currywurst mit pommes now and a herfy handbag.
