Barton is just jealous, bitter and frustrated. I think he knows he is a t**t and that

that is what has generally held him back (because he DID have talent in his feet, just not in his brain), but he simply cannot shake that off. He knows he is and always will be a t**t and that frustration is what he is taking out on whoever he can. He will always choose a controversial target or group because he knows he will never command respect, so attention is his second choice.

In short, he is a bully and always has been.
