Referees are…

In charge of the game. This is trying to undermine his authority and stir up the crowd.
It would not happen in rugby where referees are treated with respect by the players.
However wrong the players think the referee is, he won’t change his decision because a player waves an imaginary card or surround him/her and get in their faces. Accept the decision. Do the players tell the referee he’s got it wrong if it is in their favour!
