I rate the Indigo Girls version best. Rod had the hit but it was not a great version.

Needle and the Damage Done on Harvest was written about Whitten.

The original Crazy Horse version had Nils Lofgren and Ry Cooder playing on it. Lofgren later recorded his own version.
