In theory I agree with this, but the reality is

all the big media companies who pay for sport will just let the rest of us die while hyping up their current version of hell.

It's already the way, every radio show, every pundit, every social media account, they're all about the big clubs, they can barely name a player from lower league clubs. I think the whole thing would just die a death and we'd be forced to consume the monster, with people calling it "the best football in the world" - see the Champions League over the last few decades. Awful, sterile, money making competition which I can't stand, but we're all meant to think it's better than the World Cup.
