Well, just as a good coach can get more out of average players with the right system,

making them look better than they are (or indeed allowing them to be as good as they are), a good coach can also have the same but negative effect on an opponent.

So maybe Wagner simply employed genius-level tactics and game plan to render Hirst ineffective.
