Paul McCartney referenced the phrase as the name of the Beatles 1965 album Rubber Soul,[1] which was inspired by the term "plastic soul".[2] In a studio conversation recorded in June 1965 after recording the first take of "I'm Down", McCartney says "Plastic soul, man. Plastic soul."
The title derives from the colloquialism "plastic soul" and was the Beatles' way of acknowledging their lack of authenticity compared to the African-American soul artists they admired.
