The film is mostly Hollywood as the MIT team made a fortune from this lottery.
Unlike xG there is actual scientific math/data behind this.
Just like certain slot/fruit machines can be beaten.

My first ban from a casino/arcade was in the 80s when I discovered a software glitch in a certain machine that the person writing it had not thought of.
You could literally empty the machine over time.
My stupidity as a kid was that I didn't understand the principle that you can sheer a sheep many times but can only slaughter it once.
