The one you’re thinking of was caused by a stick rather than a blade. He survived only

because, luckily for him the team medic was a Vietnam war medic and had experience in similar injuries. He needed 300 stitches but was back on the ice 10 days later.

Not sure if the chap is lucky or unlucky. He later shot himself in the head and survived.
