I guess it's the difference between

Giving someone a rollicking when things aren't going right, or putting a metaphorical arm around them and trying to be supportive and encouraging.

Neither is wrong. Both work. Obviously Delia isn't the type to phone him and read the riot act. I mean seriously, can you imagine that conversation?
