Presumably he was offered the role and accepted it some time prior to that, with things looking pretty healthy. I imagine he was sold a success story or at least a club bouncing back.

He's no fool I'm sure, and he'll know as well as anyone how things can change in football. But I'm not sure he would have expected the arse to fall out of everything between interview/offer and his first day's work.
