Yes, I knew Iraq was formed after WWI, but Newman states that we

occupied it in 1914 - basically to stop the Germans completing the railway. We discovered oil there, but I'm not sure when (Newman probably says when, but I forget).

Churchill ordered the bombing of the Kurds in northern Iraq in 1919.
