Massive cock up, but nothing could be done once free kick was taken
The law doesn't currently allow any decision to be overturned once game has been restarted by the referee.
Up until then, any decision can be overturned, and always could have been long before VAR.
Difficult to spot exactly when they realised it was wrong but there is a pressure to reduce the time VAR decisions take so as soon as ref gets the OK, he'll restart.
VAR get in the bin.
