They appointed Beale because he was previously Gerrard's number two at Ibrox

Not because of his record at QPR (which was ok in a short period of time).

He was considered the brains behind the operation - as was shown when Gerrard proved himself wholly incapable of managing a decent team when he went to Villa without him.
