The argument I've heard, in relation to your skill point, is that improved physicality in any sport will allow you to train longer and harder in between matches and competitions. Training at a higher level then has its own perks (you can train with better players, you have more time and scope to work on particular aspects of your game).
To that end, while I guess it's more prominent in some sports than others, there's a huge advantage to be gained across the board.
