I assume this is due to insufficient ad revenue with the previous approach, so now no opt in, and ads cannot be avoided.

I understand the desire to cover hosting costs (or in best case to make a little profit), but have to say I prefer the honest approach of providing sponsorship / donation capabilities rather than further worsen the user experience.

But hey ho, Ben's site and his toy.
