Which was always the most likely scenario

Sub descends. Sub loses all 3 contact methods at the same time, at a time when they would still be descending, let alone approaching the wreck, and therefore unlikely to have got caught up in debris on the sea floor.

Sub does not surface despite having mechanisms to shed ballast in an emergency.

It was always pointing at implosion at the time of loss of contact really.

As said below, it would have been a much better way to go than locked in the tin can on the sea floor slowly waiting for the oxygen to run out / CO2 poisoning though. From what I hear and read, they wouldn't even have known anything about it. They'd have been fish food before their brains had time to register something was wrong.
