I think its more about the TV insiders pushing this story.

Clearly Philip was f**king people on the way up (both figuratively and physically) so they are more than happy to put the boots in on the way down.

Let's be honest, people in the entertainment industry are generally way too full of themselves. (and their importance in the world)
