This line clarified a lot of it to me: 'Over time an unwritten contract develops to bind each fan with their club. Its precise wording will be unique to each individual...'
I didn't mind the mid to late 1990s for example and felt quite connected to the club - whereas I know for a lot of fans, it was dire. I think that was the time that schools were being sent free tickets, so it was a joy to take kids to a game (no risk assessment forms that I remember needed to be filled in!) Quite often it was the first time they'd been to anything like it and were so excited!
