I have posted on here before about the need for teams like Arsenal to look at their goalkeeping issues if they are to succeed at the highest level. Lehman is a good goalkeeper for the most part but is given to bouts of incompetence, flakyness calling it what you will.
Last night proved the point most graphically. He had to go as he didn't just catch the player but deliberately grabbed his ankle. Some commentators have suggested that the ref might have allowed the goal but it could have been worse. He could still have gone back and red carded Lehman.
Chelsea have prospered in recent seasons not just because of the quality of their outfield players but because Petr Czech is such a solid practitioner.
I am sad for Arsenal but last night has proved a point. Man Utd steadied the ship with the signing of Van der Saar but this is a short term measure. Both these sides will continue to hang on the coat tails of Chelsea until they address this issue.
