Pacing is definitely the key factor in having a great or miserable last few 10kms

With the taper and the adrenalin your legs will feel amazing at the start and up to the first 25km, but resist any temptation to go faster than your predicted target pace. You can always pick up the pace towards the end if you're still feeling okay by 30km. I've heard so many post race reports that include "I was on for [insert time here] until the last 10k".

Good tip is to start further back than your estimated target time pen. The slower runners will hold you back and passing runners at the end of the race with give you a massive boost whereas having people continually overtake you can really crush your spirit and see your mile splits plummet.

I've done many marathons and long distance races and I've been in both scenarios many times. The best race and most enjoyable one I had was when I turned up late and started at the back.
