The broad point of this article is pretty spot on:

The funding the club gets from promotions puts them ahead of most championship teams but on its own it is not enough to compete in the prem because there are several teams that have been in there for a while so their prem revenues have compounded and because the prem is awash with American and Middle Eastern external finance.
I hate the premier league, they are self centred bully boys that don’t want the lower leagues to be competitive with them. They don’t want sporting merit. All they want to do is insure their place in the top league by making it harder and harder for teams coming up to stay there. It’s anti sport and is the reason I have slowly but gradually been falling out of love with the game.
American sports may not have relegations but from what I gather at least the draft system levels the playing field somewhat and makes it more sporting and competitive
