In the system we have played recently, the logical position for him would be the Kenny role. He could certainly do the defensive side and slot comfortably into that space between the central defenders but I am not sure he would provide the same “quarterback” passing capabilities Wagner seems to like in the role.
If he does bring him in there in place of Kenny, will Kenny go to the bench or will Wagner, as previous managers, shoe horn him into another position, sacrificing one of the other midfielders?
My expectation would be that for home games he will be on the bench, and might start some away games next to Kenny in a 4-2-3-1. I can’t McLean getting dropped as he has played well recently and usually never loses his place even when he is playing poorly.
Having Byram back for the run in is great. He is made of glass of course, but in the rare moments he is fit he’s certainly capable of a competent defensive job at either full back position or even centre back. Can be nice for closing out games off the bench or giving Aarons a rare few minutes off I guess.
We have missed what Onel gives us. Shame he got hurt as he has been great lately.
