Whilst VAR might not be meant to be reffing the game, or only interjecting on decisions made (which can also be decisions not made) - in practice it is. As the refs in the article allude to. Because VAR is there, they aren't making calls in he way they otherwise might.
That being the case, it seems daft to me that we don't let refs call on it to sense check their own views. Instead they have to make a decision and hope VAR steps in.
Why they have decided to over-complicate VAR is beyond me. Just copy rugby & cricket (who do get it wrong, as Eng/Ire showed... but at least we can see why they are getting it wrong)
